Trainer James Jackson has had a solid hold on Michigan’s three-year-old male division in 2010.
Jackson reached the winner’s circle in the division’s two stakes races at Pinnacle Race Course this year, saddling Hour By Hour in the June 26 Lansing Stakes and Meadow Magic in the July 31 Dowling Stakes. He will try to keep that streak alive by sending the pair to the post in Saturday’s $50,000 Mackinac Handicap.
The Mackinac Handicap drew nine Michigan-bred three-year-old males to race at a mile and a sixteenth. Last year’s installment of the Mackinac was won by Perfect Start.
Dowling Stakes winner Meadow Magic will have the inside post in Saturday’s race. The Meadow Prayer gelding won the July 31 race by four lengths, capped off by an erratic trip down the stretch. He enters the Mackinac off a third place finish in an Aug. 17 allowance race at Presque Isle Downs. James Jackson trains Meadow Magic for Laura Jackson and Red Riding Hood Stable. Tommy Molina will be in the saddle for Saturday’s race.
Also coming out of the Jackson barn is Lansing Stakes winner Hour By Hour, who will start from the outside post. The Elusive Hour gelding won the Lansing with one of his signature front-running trips for a 2 3/4 length victory. Hour By Hour comes in off an unplaced finish in another Aug. 17 allowance race at Presque Isle. Augusto Marin will wear the colors of Laura Jackson in the Mackinac. James Jackson will saddle Hour By Hour.
Lansing Stakes runner-up Secrets Only is also entered in Saturday’s race. The Secret Romeo gelding enters the Mackinac off the field’s highest last-race Beyer figure, a 73, following an 8 3/4 length score in an Aug. 8 allowance contest at Pinnacle. Robert Gorham trains Secrets Only for owner Mast Thoroughbreds, LLC. Regular rider Jeffrey Skerrett retains the mount for the Mackinac.

After a gate to wire victory in the June 26 Lansing Stakes, Hour By Hour will try to continue his run of success in Saturday’s $20,000 Dowling Stakes at Pinnacle Race Course.
Hour By Hour will face eight foes in the Dowling, including several rivals from the Lansing. Last year’s installment of the one mile race for Michigan-bred three-year-olds was won by Meadow Wise.
For the second straight year, the purse for the Dowling has been decreased from its regular size of $50,000 to cover the cost of regulation from the Michigan Gaming Control Board.
Hour By Hour pulled away in the Lansing to win by 2 3/4 lengths with a front-running trip. The Elusive Hour colt earned a share of last year’s Michigan-bred two-year-old male title following a score in his division of the Sire Stakes at Pinnacle last October. Saturday’s race will be Hour By Hour’s first start longer than six furlongs since missing the board in last October’s Michigan Futurity at Pinnacle. James Jackson will saddle Hour By Hour for owners Valerie Irvine and Laura Jackson. Regular rider Federico Mata retains the assignment in the saddle. Hour By Hour will share the entry with Meadow Magic, ridden by Ricardo Barrios and owned by Laura Jackson and Red Riding Hood Stables LLC.
Secrets Only earned a runner-up finish to Hour By Hour in the Lansing, after trailing him in second for the entire race. The Secret Romeo gelding enters the Dowling off a pair of second place finishes at Pinnacle to Hour By Hour and Meadow Magic. Trainer Bob Gorham will give Jeffrey Skerrett the leg up for owner Mast Thoroughbreds, LLC. Secrets Only will be part of a two-horse Gorham/Mast entry in the Dowling along with Watchin The Vix, who will be ridden by Tommy Molina.
After finishing fourth in the Lansing, Power Of Titus shipped down to Mountaineer Park and finished second in a July 16 allowance race. The Secret Romeo gelding also finished second in last September’s Patrick Wood Stakes at Pinnacle. Alexis Ortiz will have the mount for owner and trainer Del Waite.

Hour By Hour struck the first blow on the road to defending his co-title as the best male of his Michigan-bred crop with a front-running score in Saturday’s $50,000 Lansing Stakes at Pinnacle Race Course.
The Elusive Hour colt fired immediately and took command on the outside in the race’s opening strides. He kept a one-length cushion as he worked his way to the rail, while Secrets Only and post time favorite Prince of Paulie battled to keep chase. Hour By Hour maintained his lead heading into the final turn while Prince of Paulie fell off the pace and was replaced by a gaining calvary charge.
Secrets Only whittled away at Hour By Hour’s lead throughout the turn and came to even terms heading into the stretch. His charge was quickly repelled by Hour By Hour, who responded to urging by jockey Federico Mata to regain his advantage and power away from his rival. Under Mata’s right hand whip, Hour By Hour continued to add to his lead as he drove to the wire to win by 2 3/4 lengths. Secrets Only carried on to finish second, two lengths ahead of a rail-running Meadow Magic.
Hour By Hour completed the six furlong race in 1:11.67 over a fast track, just two tenths of a second off the track record of 1:11.40, set by Funky Pirate on September 16, 2008. He was the field’s sixth choice at odds of 9.40-to-one.
Hour By Hour was homebred in Michigan by Valerie Irvine and is also owned by Laura Jackson. He is trained by James Jackson. With the win, Hour By Hour improved his career record to three wins from five starts. Two of those wins have come in stakes company. His career earnings now total $72,940.
