Cc Cartel drives late in Michigan Bred Derby

Cc Cartel kicked off her 2010 campaign in a big way with a win in Sunday’s $15,000 Michigan Bred Derby at Mount Pleasant Meadows.

The Southern Cartel filly broke well and was second by a nose in a tightly bunched pack early on. Eight Below 123 held on to a slight lead through the stretch, with Cc Cartel, Dials Corona For Me, Later Version and Tuff Southern Gal all within a half length. With the wire approaching, Cc Cartel fired under jockey Aron Hunt to separate herself from the pack and win the Michigan Bred Derby by two lengths. Eight Below 123 hung on for second by a nose over Dials Corona For Me, who also prevailed by only a nose over fourth place finisher Tuff Southern Gal.

The winning time in the 350 yard race was 17.911 seconds over a fast track. Cc Cartel was part of a three-horse entry that left the gates as the 1.20-to-one post time favorite.

Cc Cartel was homebred in Michigan by Dave and Shirley Gates. Dave Gates also saddled the winner. Indiana Downs-based rider Hunt came to Mount Pleasant for the first time this year, possibly for the first time ever, to take the winning mount. The Michigan Bred Derby was Cc Cartel’s third win from nine starts for earnings of $16,890. It was also her first win in stakes company.

Tuff Southern Gal seeks comeback win in Michigan Bred Derby

Tuff Southern Gal leads a field of six in the Michigan Bred Derby at Mount Pleasant Meadows.

Michigan’s three-year-old Quarter Horse crop will face its first stakes test in Sunday’s $15,000 Michigan Bred Derby at Mount Pleasant Meadows.

Tuff Southern Gal is one of three horses in the 350 yard race to be saddled by trainer Dave Gates. The Southern Cartel filly came within a neck of winning last year’s $100,000 Indiana Stallion Service Auction Futurity at Hoosier Park, finishing second. Tuff Southern Gal will make her first start of the year on Sunday, following a fifth place finish in an allowance race last Oct. 11 at Hoosier. Trainer Gates also owns the filly with his wife, Shirley. Lee Gates will have the mount.

Dials Corona For Me is only horse in the field to hold claim to a prior stakes victory. The Corona For Me gelding earned that distinction following a half-length score in last year’s Michigan Bred Futurity at Mount Pleasant. He enters the race off a half-length win against allowance company on June 13 at the same track. Juan Delgado will ride Dials Corona For me for owner and trainer Tony Cunningham.

After wintering at Hialeah Park, Refined Cowboy returns to Mount Pleasant for the Michigan Bred Derby. The Cowboys Rodeo colt comes in off an unplaced finish in a Feb. 3 claiming contest at the revived Florida racetrack. Nate Alcala will get the leg up aboard Refined Cowboy by trainer Dave Gates for owner Cecil Merritt.

Lots of entries, few betting interests in weekend’s stakes races

Mr. Conclusive, last years Champion two-year-old male will look to keep his undefeated streak alive this Saturday.

Mr. Conclusive, last year's champion two-year-old male, will look to keep his undefeated streak alive this Saturday.

Mr. Conclusive makes ’09 debut in Dowling Stakes

A deflated purse did not scare the entries off, as an overflow field was drawn for Saturday’s $20,000 Dowling Stakes at Pinnacle Race Course.

The one mile race for three-year-old colts and geldings is one of four stakes races on Pinnacle’s schedule to be decreased from $50,000 to $20,000 to cover the cost of operations for the Office of Racing Commissioner.

The Dowling also marks the return of 2008 Michigan Two-Year-Old of the Year Mr. Conclusive from an extended hiatus.

Mr. Conclusive was undefeated in four starts in his juvenile campaign, winning all three of Pinnacle’s two-year-old male stakes races by a combined 17 1/4 lengths. His most recent victory was a 2 1/4 length romp in last year’s Michigan Futurity at the Detroit-area racetrack.

The Elusive Hour colt is owned by Charlie Williams and trained by Sandra Adkins. He will have the services of Thistledown rider Jane Magrell on Saturday.

The Robert Gorham/Henry Mast connection will send three entries to post, highlighted by Lansing Stakes winner Juggle.

The Elusive Hour colt outlasted stablemate Meadow Wise to take the Lansing by a nose on June 13. He enters the Dowling off a seventh-place finish against older company in the July 4 Wolverine Stakes. Juggle will be ridden by Jeffrey Skerrett.

Also entered is another part of the Gorham/Mast three-horse entry, Meadow Wise.

The Meadow Prayer gelding rallied late, but missed by a nose to Juggle in the Lansing. Despite an active stakes campaign at two and three, Meadow Wise enters the race off his maiden victory, a 1 1/2 length driving win against Maiden Special Weight company on July 4 at Pinnacle. Angel Stanley will ride Meadow Wise in the Dowling.

Dials Corona for Me headlines Stallion Service Sale Futurity

Dials Corona For Me will seek her second straight stakes victory at Mount Pleasant Meadows this Sunday.

After a driving win in her first stakes race, Dials Corona for Me will look to add some more blacktype to her resume in Sunday’s $36,483 GLQHA Stallion Service Sale Futurity at Mount Pleasant Meadows.

The two-year-old Corona for Me filly enters the 350 yard race for juveniles as the field’s lone stakes winner. She accomplished that feat in the June 14 Michigan Bred Futurity at Mount Pleasant, winning the race by a half length.

Owned and trained by Anthony Cunningham, Dials Corona For Me enters the race off a second place finish in the July 12 trials. She will be ridden by Oscar Delgado.

After turning in the fastest time of the four trials, I Do One Two Three is part of the two-horse entry set as the morning line favorite. The Judy’s Lineage paint gelding finished a half length ahead of Dials Corona for Me to stop the clocks at :17.87 seconds in the 350-yard race. The trial was the horse’s first race at Mount Pleasant following three starts at Retama Park.

I Do One Two Three is owned by T Bill Stables and trained by Jay Hall. Julie Veltman will be in the irons for the final.

Also entered is Ron Raper charge Happenedindamoonlite. Owned by Jack Geer, the Jewels First Moon gelding finished second in the Michigan Bred Futurity. Weekend Stakes Recap

Juggle hangs on to win Lansing Stakes

Juggle made an early statement in Michigan’s three-year-old colts and geldings division, holding off stablemate Meadow Wise to win by a nose in Saturday’s $50,000 Lansing Stakes at Pinnacle Race Course. The Elusive Hour colt dueled with post-time favorite Perfect Start for a half mile and pulled clear entering the stretch. Juggle then held off a late charge from Meadow Wise to win the race in 1:13.17 under jockey Jeffrey Skerrett. Longshot Red Bow Tie finished 2 1/2 lengths behind Meadow Wise for third. Perfect Start faded to fourth.

Juggle, bred by E.D. Hubel and J.E. Hubel, increased his career earnings to $59,231. The winning exacta was owned by Mast Thoroughbreds LLC and trained by Robert Gorham. The Lansing Stakes was Juggle’s third win from five starts. He is two-for-two in 2009, winning an allowance race on Pinnacle’s opening day, June 5.

Dials Corona for Me powers clear in GLQHA MI-Bred Futurity

Dials Corona for Me (2b) holds off Happenedindamoonlite (6) to take the final (and yes, I blew the shot. I’m awful at getting quarter horse finishes with large fields).

Dials Corona For Me managed to avoid much of the commotion coming out of the gates to take Sunday’s $26,170 Great Lakes Quarter Horse Association Michigan-Bred Futurity by a half length at Mount Pleasant Meadows. The homebred two-year-old Corona for Me filly put a nose ahead of a tight pack coming into the stretch and pulled away as the wire drew near under jockey Oscar Delgado. Dials Corona for Me was joined in her late separation from the pack by Happenedindamoonlite, who finished 3/4 lengths ahead of Cc Cartel to take second in the 300-yard race.

Owned and trained by Tony Cunningham, Dials Corona for Me increased her career earnings to $12,317 with the win. The race was the filly’s first victory in three starts, following two third-place finishes earlier this year.

Fellow 2008 Sire Stakes winner Bipolar Express is also entered in an allowance optional claimer earlier in the card.
